The Youth Services Unit consists of investigators who specialize in crimes involving Juvenile victims. These detectives are specially trained to investigate crimes such as; physical and sexual abuse of children, child pornography, Internet Solicitation of children and child deaths. Youth Services investigates juvenile runaways and all missing person cases. They also investigate crimes of violence, such as assault and robbery, committed against juveniles. These detectives also assist in other major investigations as needed. This unit consists of three detectives and one supervisor. During a recent twelve month period, this unit investigated nearly 1,000 cases. The majority of these cases were felony crimes committed against children. Sheriff Mark Pettway understands the importance of this unit and is well aware of the challenges these investigators face. He was one of the original investigators assigned to this unit at its inception in 1984.
