On April 20, 2020, a 17 year-old juvenile and his friend, 16 year-old Taylor Akin were traveling in a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro on 15th Street Road in the Bessemer area. The Camaro, driven by the 17 year-old, was traveling at a high rate of speed. It struck a SUV, left the roadway and flipped. The accident killed Akin and injured the juvenile driver, as well as an occupant of the SUV.

After reviewing the evidence with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, warrants were issued against the 17 year-old for Manslaughter, with excessive speed being a factor.  The evidence shows the Camaro was traveling at approximately 115 MPH at the point of impact. The juvenile turned himself in at approximately 3:00 PM on April 27, 2020. His bond for the Manslaughter Charge is $30,000. He may also face additional charges in juvenile court associated with this case.
