Drug and Firearm Seizure

On August 29, 2024, detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Vice and Narcotics Division were conducting a narcotics and violent crime suppression detail in the Tarrant City area.  The detail resulted in arrests with drug and firearms seizures in the 2400 block of White Avenue, located in the Tarrant Brummitt Heights neighborhood.

Sheriff Mark Pettway stated, “This is another example as to why we want our citizens to continue to let us know about suspicious activity.  No one knows more about what is occurring in their neighborhood than the people who live there.  Several fully automatic weapons as well as other weapons and drugs have been taken off the streets of Jefferson County.  My number one priority is to keep our citizens safe.”

Suspect #1 has been identified as: Odyssey Davon Amari Smith, age 24, of Birmingham, AL.  The suspect has been charged with Altering ID On Firearm, with a bond of $15,000.00; Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, with a $10,000.00 bond and Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling, (Bond Revoked).  Smith is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.

Suspect #2 has been identified as: Tobby Ornell Smith, age 18, of Birmingham, AL.  The suspect has been charged with Altering ID On Firearm, with a bond of $15,000.00 and Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, with a $10,000.00 bond.  Smith has been released from the Jefferson County Jail.

Suspect #3 has been identified as: Donta Lamar Mitchell, age 18, of Birmingham, AL.  The suspect has been charged with Altering ID On Firearm, with a bond of $15,000.00 and Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, with a $10,000.00 bond.  Mitchell has been released from the Jefferson County Jail. 

Suspect #4 has been identified as: Roderick Lavelle Thompson, age 23, of Birmingham, AL.  The suspect has been charged with Altering ID On Firearm, with a bond of $15,000.00 and Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, under a $10,000.00 bond.  Thompson has been released from the Jefferson County Jail.

Suspect #5 has been identified as: J’marcus Maurice Carey, age 18, of Tarrant, AL.  The suspect has been charged with Altering ID On Firearm, with a bond of $15,000.00; Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, with a $10,000.00 bond and Attempting to Elude, with a $1,000.00 bond. Carey has been released from the Jefferson County Jail.

Weapons seized:  Four Glock pistols converted to fully automatic machine guns (switch); two AR rifles converted to be fully automatic machine guns (swift link); one shotgun; and two additional rifles.

Drugs seized: 257 grams of Marijuana and a white powdery substance
