RENEWED FOR RE-ENTRY PROGRAM

Sheriff Mark Pettway continues to build on his campaign promise to ensure the county jail is not a revolving door and thus lowering the recidivism rate here in Jefferson County. He initially rolled out his Renewed for Re-entry program in 2019 with the idea that “every single person deserves a fair shot at redemption.” That was not just a campaign speech, but a heartfelt promise to make a difference in Jefferson County. Sheriff Pettway is building on that promise, with the expansion of the Renewed for Re-entry program by adding a new chapter with the launch of IGNITE.
IGNITE, a National Sheriffs’ Association program, is the acronym for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education. This is a program that offers education, job certification and post incarceration work opportunities. IGNITE will further Sheriff Pettway’s vision for his educational programs by reducing recidivism, promoting rehabilitation, and preparing incarcerated individuals for a successful re-entry into society.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Renewed for Re-Entry Program is specifically designed to change the culture of incarceration and the stigma associated with being a citizen returning to the community after incarceration. Sheriff Pettway has entered into partnerships with Lawson State Community College, The Dannon Project, a coalition of faith-based organizations, non-profits, and service agencies providing wraparound support. Student inmates are given an opportunity to take charge of their futures and not become repeat offenders in the criminal justice system.
Inmates eligible for the program, which is funded through a community grant, are those who are being held on non-violent offenses. The Education Training Coordinator, and the jail staff will identify those inmate volunteers who are best suited for the program. Sheriff Pettway said, “when we believe in people and equip them with opportunities, we ignite hope, transform lives, and build safer communities, one second chance at a time.”
