Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office have made an arrest in a September 10, 2023 homicide. On that day, deputies were alerted to shots being fired in the area of Dewey Heights Road in Northeast Jefferson County around 3:00 PM. Upon arrival they discovered the body of 51-year-old Anthony Dewain Word. Word had been shot to death by an unknown suspect who fled the scene.
After a detailed investigation, detectives were able to establish a suspect in the death. Daysha Nicole Bennett, a 35-year-old acquaintance of the victim, was taken into custody and placed into the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham on the charge of intentional murder. Her charge currently has no bond.
