Birmingham Man Charged After Fatal Crash with Motorcycle

A sixty-five year old Birmingham man has been arrested and charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide after the van he was driving collided with a motorcycle resulting in the death of the driver.

At about 7:20 pm last night deputies were called to the 1400 block of 4th Place NW in Center Point to investigate a report of a traffic accident. They arrived to find a motorcycle and a van involved in the accident. The adult male driver of the motorcycle suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the van was identified as 65 year old Richard Sanders of Birmingham.

Detectives learned that the motorcycle had been traveling in front of the van driven by Sanders. When the motorcycle slowed to make a turn the van collided with the motorcycle. Deputies determined that the driver of the van was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

Detectives today obtained a warrant charging Sanders with Criminally Negligent Homicide. He remains n the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $15,000.
