Birmingham, AL 10/02/2016
Just before 4:30 yesterday afternoon deputies responded to a report of the discovery of possible human remains in a shallow grave near the town of West Jefferson. The remains were discovered in a wooded area off of Oakdale Road near the Miller Steam Plant.
A pair of volunteers who were assisting family members to search for a missing couple from Walker County discovered the remains. The pair reported that they were somewhat familiar with the area and had been provided a map by Walker County Sheriff’s investigators that indicated the areas where the missing couple’s cell phones were last used. They were walking the area and discovered the remains in the woods.
Once on scene deputies discovered one set of partially buried human remains in a shallow grave. Deputies also found an area of disturbed earth adjacent to it that is believed to be a second shallow grave.
The scene has been secured to await the arrival of a Forensic Recovery Team from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office tomorrow morning.
The remains have not yet been identified. The investigation is ongoing. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
