A death investigation that began late Saturday night has now been classified a homicide investigation.

About 11:15 pm on Saturday February 24, deputies responded to a report of a fire off the side of the road in the 300 block of Mulga Loop Road near the Minor Community.

Once the fire was extinguished, deputies discovered the remains of an adult male.

This morning the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 29-year-old Monty Lewayne Davis of Birmingham. Evidence indicates Davis had been shot elsewhere and then dumped off the side of Mulga Loop Road. It is believed the fire was set in an attempt to conceal the crime.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
