Just after 8:30 pm this evening a deputy was driving along Foust Court near Forestdale when they encountered a silver Pontiac Bonneville coming directly at their patrol unit in the wrong lane. The deputy moved out of the way and turned around to make a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and a chase ensued.
The chase traveled onto Highway 78 to Mulberry Road and onto Roberta Road. The suspect vehicle sustained a flat tire and came to a stop on Roberta Road near Collette Street. A deputy approached the car and attempted to remove the driver. The driver put the car in reverse and began backing up knocking the deputy to the ground. The car continued in reverse toward a second deputy who fired shots at the driver. The driver put the car in drive and drove off striking four parked cars as he did so.
The chase resumed on Roberta Road to I-22. The driver wrecked on I-22 near Coalburg Road where he was taken into custody. The adult male suspect was found to have a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He has been transported to an area hospital. His wounds are not life-threatening. A female passenger in the suspect vehicle was not injured and is being questioned by deputies.
The deputy who was knocked to the ground by the suspect vehicle was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The investigation is ongoing. Updates will be provided as information becomes available. The name of the suspect is withheld pending formal charges.
