At approximately 5:00 AM this morning, a deputy in the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham was performing his normal cell checks. During the check, he found a 48-year-old male inmate who was unresponsive. Medical personnel responded to the cell but were unable to revive the inmate. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The inmate was in a cell alone and there was no sign of foul play or evident trauma. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner the inmate’s death.
