On Monday June 8, 2020 at approximately 1:06pm Jefferson County Deputies responded to a medical call on the women’s floor of the Jefferson county jail in Birmingham. Deputies and medical personnel arrived to find that a 35 year old inmate had given birth to a dead fetus in her cell. The fetus appeared to have been from 6 to 12 weeks old. It appeared that the fetus had been dead in the womb for some time. The inmate was committed to jail on Friday June 6, 2020 for Failure to Appear. On Saturday June 7, 2020 Deputies observed the inmate acting strangely and found that she was in possession of several open suboxone packs (medication for treating opioid addiction) that had been concealed in her vagina. The inmate was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The fetus will be examined by a pathologist. This incident is still under investigation.
