Summer with the Sheriff Internship Program

The Summer with the Sheriff Internship Program was created by Sheriff Mark Pettway to give young people meaningful exposure to law enforcement, leadership, and career opportunities while building positive relationships between youth and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The program was designed to help students better understand the criminal justice system, explore future career paths, and see firsthand how deputies serve and protect the community each day.

This program gives interns an unprecedented look at the many roles within the Sheriff’s Office and the criminal justice system. Interns will have the opportunity to meet the Sheriff, shadow deputies, visit courtrooms, and tour college campuses. The internship is now open to students ages 13 and up, offering valuable early exposure for those interested in criminal justice and public service careers.

Designed to help students explore long-term career paths with clarity and confidence, the program lasts three weeks. More details will be announced soon, and space is limited.

“Summer with the Sheriff was created to give young people access, guidance, and real-world experiences that help them see what’s possible for their future. When we invest in our youth, we strengthen our entire community.”
— Sheriff Mark Pettway
