On January 19, a representative of the Bessemer Junior Service League contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to report the theft. It was reported that a review of bank statements revealed several unauthorized expenditures. The treasurer of the organization, 40-year-old Stacey Green, was discovered to have written several unauthorized checks to herself and family members.  The checks were written over an eighteen month period from June 2016 until January 2018 and totaled $76,769.68.

AS part of the investigation, Sheriff’s detectives questioned Green about the checks. She told investigators that she knew what she had was wrong, but she needed money and did not know what else to do. She admitted to writing the checks and taking the money.

On January 30, 2018, detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Stacey Green with Theft of Property 1st Degree. On January 31, she turned herself into the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer. She was released on $10,000 bond pending court proceedings.
