On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, shortly before 9:30 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office assisted the U.S. Marshals Service with a vehicle pursuit involving a suspect who was reportedly firing shots at law enforcement officers while fleeing.
The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle near Haven Drive and Oak Ridge Drive in Forestdale, Alabama. The suspect then fled the vehicle on foot.
As U.S. Marshals task force members pursued the suspect, they heard a gunshot moments later. The suspect was subsequently located lying on the ground with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Medical assistance was requested, but the 49-year-old male suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
There were no shots fired by law enforcement. Two law enforcement officers received minor injuries during the foot pursuit
The suspect was wanted on charges of First-Degree Rape and First-Degree Kidnapping.
The investigation remains ongoing and is pending the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s report. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
