Just before 12:30 pm today a Jefferson County sheriff’s sergeant attempted to conduct a traffic stop after observing a vehicle driving recklessly on I-59 north near 20th Street in Ensley. Instead of stopping the driver of the gold 2001 Chevrolet Malibu accelerated and fled and threw what looked like a box out of the vehicle window.

The car traveled the wrong way down the on ramp to I-59 and on to Bush Blvd. It then traveled down the wrong side of the road along Bush Blvd until it collided with a red Chevrolet pickup truck.

The driver, 29 year old Jonathan Tyler Hicks of Locust Fork, was taken into custody. He was found to have an outstanding misdemeanor warrant with the City of Vestavia Hills for failure to appear on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He now faces additional charges of Reckless Driving and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Hicks will also be charged with felony Attempting to Elude because his flight resulted in injury to another person. He suffered minor injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital. An adult female passenger in the car also suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. She faces no charges. Two male passengers riding in the backseat of the suspect vehicle fled the scene after the wreck.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
