On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at approximately 1:08 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and other specialized units responded to the 100 block of Glen Brook Road, Sumiton, Alabama to assist the Sumiton Police Department with a possible shooting and hostage situation. Reportedly, an adult female was deceased; a juvenile female was injured; and a male juvenile was hiding in a home asking for help. However, after further investigation, it was determined that the home was vacant and that swatting, or prank phone call had occurred. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, ALEA, the U.S. Marshals Office, and other surrounding law enforcement agencies as well as emergency medical services all responded to the scene.
While the Sumiton Police Department and the other responding agencies are relieved and thankful that there was no loss of life or injuries in the case, citizens must understand that swatting is a dangerous matter and can have potentially deadly consequences. In this case, the home was vacant. However, resources from agencies were still pulled from other areas that could have possibly been needed in other communities. Swatting calls of this kind is a Class C felony. In addition, if convicted, a person may be ordered to pay restitution for expenses incurred by the agencies that responded to the scene.
Sumiton Police Chief, T.J. Bernette stated, “The Sumiton Police Department greatly appreciates all of the assistance that we received today. The investigation is still ongoing. We will work diligently to bring those who are responsible to justice.”
If there is anyone who has information pertaining to the case, they are encouraged to contact the Sumiton Police Department at 205-648-3261 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
