On Monday, October 5, 2026, at approximately 5:57 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Hoover Police Department officers responded to the 3700 block of Chestnut Ridge Lane in Hoover following a report of a child drowning in a swimming pool.

Upon arrival, deputies and officers learned that two Good Samaritans had discovered a 2-year-old male victim in the swimming pool. The individuals immediately removed the child from the water and began performing CPR. Their lifesaving efforts were successful, and the child regained consciousness.

Rocky Ridge Fire & Rescue transported the child to Children’s Hospital, where he remained alert and was admitted for continued monitoring.

During the preliminary investigation, deputies learned that the victim’s 3-year-old sister had also been in the pool area. She was reportedly unharmed. The child was able to lead deputies to the family’s residence in the 100 block of Chestnut Lane in Hoover. Upon arrival, deputies observed that the residence was unsecured and in disarray.

Hoover Police officers and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies obtained a telephone number for the children’s mother. The mother subsequently returned to the residence and was interviewed.

Following the interview, Tatiana Sade Hurst, 25, was taken into custody without incident.

“The actions of the Good Samaritans were exemplary. This could have very well been the difference between life and death,” said Sheriff Mark Pettway. “In addition, the investigative efforts of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Hoover Police Department officers were outstanding, to say the least. This incident demonstrates how everyone working together can make a significant difference in our communities.”

Hurst has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Child Abuse – Serious Injury

  • Two counts of Child Neglect

  • Two counts of Family Abandonment

Hurst remains in the Jefferson County Jail with a $174,000 bond.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
