Birmingham, AL 08/10/2016

Just before 5:00 pm yesterday deputies responded to a report of shots being fired into a car at 20th Street and 3rd Avenue NE.

The adult female driver of the car reported that she had been driving along 20th Street NE when she passed a black male walking. After she passed she heard two gun shots and the passenger side window of her car shattered. Her five year old daughter who was riding in the car with her was cut by flying glass. The child was treated on the scene by paramedics.

After firing the shots the suspect fled on foot. A description of the suspect was broadcast to responding deputies. A deputy located a man matching the description in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex. Upon seeing the deputy he laid down on the ground and surrendered. He was armed with a handgun and admitted to shooting the car.

21 year old Darius Donnell Bennett of Center Point told detectives he had been walking along 20th Street NE when the car passed. He believed the car was going too fast and had come too close to him so he fired shots at the car.
