BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will hold graduation for the third class of IGNITE this week. IGNITE is a National Sheriffs’ Association program that stands for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education. Inmates in this program are offered educational courses, job certification and post incarceration work opportunities.
“During my campaign, I have stressed the need to end the revolving door that too often defines our jail system,” Sheriff Pettway said. “I’m proud that my office has honored that commitment by helping inmates make better choices and connecting them with opportunities to become productive citizens of their communities.”
As part of this mission, Sheriff Pettway has formed a coalition of community partners to ensure that program participants receive comprehensive support throughout their reentry journey. Lawson State Community College provides educational resources and workforce development training, equipping participants with valuable skills and certifications that lead to meaningful employment opportunities upon release. The Dannon Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides supportive services that include short-term training, certifications, job placement, and re-entry case management services to repair, restore, and renew the lives of incarcerated individuals. This will effectively interrupt the cycle of recidivism as citizens re-enter society.
