On Monday, January 12, 2026, before noon, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers (SROs) discovered that a 17-year-old male student at McAdory High School was in possession of a firearm. The SROs quickly secured the weapon and took the student into custody. Reportedly, the student never displayed the weapon or threatened anyone.
Sheriff Mark Pettway stated, “I am thankful for the due diligence of our SROs. Their quick response possibly helped prevent a serious incident from occurring.”
The 17-year-old suspect has been charged with Certain Persons (Minor) Forbidden to Possess a Pistol. The juvenile suspect is currently in custody at the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center.
