The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office would like citizens to be aware of fraudulent text message scams, commonly known as “smishing,” is targeting consumers across the nation, prompting renewed warnings from the Federal Trade Commission and cybersecurity experts.
These scams use deceptive text messages to impersonate trusted organizations, including major companies, as well as financial institutions and government agencies. The goal is to trick recipients into clicking malicious links, sharing sensitive information, or downloading harmful software.
Recent reports indicate that scammers are increasingly using urgent language and realistic branding to pressure individuals into acting quickly. Common messages claim issues with package deliveries, suspicious account activity, or offer fake rewards and refunds.
Citizens should be cautious of any unsolicited text message that asks for personal or financial information, Legitimate organizations will not request sensitive details through text messages.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office recommend the following steps to protect against text scams:
- Avoid clicking on links or responding to unexpected messages
- Verify the sender by contacting the company directly through official channels
- Block suspicious numbers and delete fraudulent messages
- Report scams by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM) or filing a complaint with the FTC
