As families across Jefferson County enjoy summer vacations, outdoor activities, and community events, Sheriff Mark Pettway is reminding residents that a few simple safety precautions can help prevent accidents and crime.
“Summer is a time for making memories with family and friends,” said Sheriff Mark Pettway. “By staying alert and taking a few common-sense precautions, we can all help keep our homes, families, and neighborhoods safe.”
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to follow these important summer safety tips:
Protect Your Home
- Lock all doors, windows, garages, and vehicles before leaving home.
- Set your security alarm and use timers on lights to create the appearance that someone is home.
- Avoid posting vacation plans on social media until you return.
- If you have security cameras, know how to retrieve and download video footage should it be needed.
- Ask a trusted neighbor to check on your home or have your mail held while you’re away.
Keep Children Safe
- Ensure children wear properly fitted helmets while riding bicycles, scooters, or skateboards.
- Teach children to stay in familiar areas and regularly check in with parents or guardians.
- Closely supervise children during outdoor activities, especially around water.
Practice Water Safety
- Never leave children unattended near pools, lakes, rivers, or other bodies of water.
- Designate a responsible “Water Watcher” during gatherings.
- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket while boating or kayaking.
- Never operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Drive Responsibly
- Eliminate distractions, obey posted speed limits, and never drive impaired.
- Plan your travel route before leaving and stay on well-traveled roads.
- Park in well-lit areas and lock your vehicle.
Use Fire Safely
- Keep grills and fire pits a safe distance from homes and other structures.
- Never leave outdoor fires unattended.
- Follow all local burn restrictions and fireworks safety regulations.
Stay Aware in Public
- Secure purses, bags, and wallets, and never leave valuables visible inside vehicles.
- Stay aware of your surroundings while walking, jogging, shopping, or enjoying community events.
Protect Yourself from the Heat
- Wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, along with a hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
- Drink plenty of water and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
- Know the warning signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, and excessive sweating.
Watch Out for Scams
- Never provide personal or financial information to unknown callers, texts, or emails.
- Verify the credentials of contractors and service providers before hiring them or making payments.
Sheriff Pettway reminds residents that public safety is a shared responsibility.
“Our deputies are committed to serving and protecting Jefferson County every day, but we also rely on our community to remain vigilant,” Pettway said. “Simple actions like locking your doors, protecting your personal information, supervising children, and looking out for your neighbors can make a significant difference.”
As summer continues, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to remain alert, practice good safety habits, and enjoy the season responsibly.
