On Sunday, July 12, 2026, an off-duty deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, who routinely patrols the Mount Olive area, received an anonymous tip regarding a suspect that was seen on a video attempting to abandon two dogs near Woodward Road in Mount Olive.
Based on the information received, deputies responded to the 6000 block of Lakeside drive to follow up on the welfare of the animals. Upon arrival, deputies were granted permission to view the two dogs. They observed that both animals were malnourished and that they were being kept in deplorable conditions.
Deputies contacted the Jefferson County Animal Control Investigator and advised him of what they discovered. The investigator advised them to place the suspect under arrest. The suspect was taken to the Jefferson County Jail without incident.
Jefferson County Animal Control arrived at the residence and took the animals to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) for evaluation and treatment.
Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway praised the deputies’ efforts and the citizen who reported seeing the incident on social media.
“Our deputies did a great job on using the information and evidence received from a citizen to make an arrest. We always say, ‘See something, say something,’ and that’s exactly what happened. The information they provided made a big difference,” Pettway said.
The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Delmetrius Bishop who has been charged with Cruelty to Dog/Cat 1st Degree with a $15,000 bond and Cruelty to Dog/Cat 2nd Degree with a $6,000 bond. Bishop has since been released from the Jefferson County Jail.
If there is anyone with information pertaining to the case, they are encouraged to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
