Shortly before noon today, a Jefferson County School Resource Officer (SRO) was notified that a student at Clay-Chalkville High School had a handgun.  The SRO quickly took possession of the handgun and took the 16-year-old male student into custody.  Reportedly, the student never took the weapon out or threatened anyone with it.  Sheriff Mark Pettway stated, “We are pleased that the individual who reported the incident felt comfortable enough to alert the school SRO.  Our SROs work diligently to bridge the gap between law enforcement and our youth.”

The 16-year-old suspect has been charged with: Certain Persons (Minor) Forbidden to Possess a Pistol and Receiving Stolen Property.  The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center.

The case is still under investigation.  If there is anyone who has information pertaining to the case, they are encouraged to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
