Captain James Guntharp began his law enforcement career with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in 1989. He has worked in various assignments (SWAT, FTO, K-9 and START) and all the substations and shifts. He has worked as a patrol supervisor in Forestdale, Center Point and Cahaba Heights. While a lieutenant in the Birmingham County Jail he supervised the Emergency Response Team, Sex Offender Unit and Warrant Detail. He is currently the Captain of the School Resource Division. He is a graduate of Jefferson State Junior College with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and is working on a degree with The University of W. Alabama with Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety as well as many other classes from Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Secret Service. When away from the Sheriff’s Office he is an instructor with the U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary assisting in Boater Safety classes and vessel examinations and verifying aids to navigation. He is a long-time competitive shooter and has competed around the country winning numerous awards.
