Detectives in the Criminal Division are responsible for the investigation, identification, and apprehension of criminals in various crimes such as theft, robbery, murder, and sex crimes. Youth Services investigates crimes committed by persons younger than 18, missing persons, and cases involving child abuse and sexual abuse.
The Birmingham Area Crime Stoppers program, formed in 1981, is now housed in the Criminal Division of Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Personnel assigned to this division utilize traditional investigative skills as well as advanced technical procedures to conduct many types of criminal investigations.
Modern transportation systems today allow criminals to be more mobile than they were in the past. To meet this challenge, detectives maintain frequent contact with investigators throughout the county, state, and nation to share knowledge of the criminal activity.
