The detectives in the Criminal Division are responsible for the investigation, identification, and apprehension of criminals in various crimes such as theft, robbery, murder, and sex crimes. Additionally Youth Services investigates crimes committed by persons younger than 18, missing persons, and cases involving child abuse and sexual abuse.

The Birmingham Area Crime Stoppers program formed in 1981 is now housed in the Criminal Division of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Crimestoppers pays cash rewards up to $2,000.00 for information leading to the arrest of wanted criminals. Callers may remain anonymous by calling Crimestoppers at 205-254-7777.
